EASAC is made up of 25 national science academies, 23 national science academies in the EU member states ( Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta do not have national science academies) and, to provide a complementary Europe-wide perspective, the Academia Europaea and ALLEA
The EASAC Council consists of 25 individuals (see below) nominated by the national academies The 25 members of Council are empowered to make all decisions necessary to the running of EASAC without referring back to their nominating bodies.
The Chairman of EASAC is Professor Volker ter Meulen of the the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina; the Vice-Chairmen are Professor Brian Heap of the Academia Europaea, Professor Sven Kullander of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Professor Jos van der Meer of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. These four constitute the Bureau, which is responsible for taking operational decisions between the six-monthly meetings of the Council. The secretariat is based at the Royal Society.
